We believe all cats should be neutered-male or female. The best time to do this is at about six months of age.In some circumstances it can be done sooner. In terms of a surgical procedure it is very routine.Modern anaesthetics allow cats to be home again in hours. Most males need no stitches and females have a small shaved patch on their side with a few small visible stitches. For difficult to handle female cats such as ferals we recommend soluble stitches as a further vet trip for removal can be stressful. Most cats can go out in 24 hours when the anaesthetic is out of the system. For people on very low income or pension and who receive benefits we can often help with half price vouchers.Apply on line or ring us on 0845 1947 292 if you live local to our branch.
We are pleased to be able to help farmers, stable owners and others with large numbers of free roaming cats on their land to have them all neutered and checked over by a vet. This is hugely expensive and time consuming but we believe it worthwhile.
In most years we help between 100 and 350 cats in these situations. This year is just as busy.We humanely caught 33 cats on one farm and neutered the 30 adults.Three kittens were taken in for foster care.Sadly one died of respiratory failure due to persistant flu symptoms all too typical of large in bred colonies.
Kittens from such colonies can often find their way into homes with local families. At best this means a good home.At worst it means a kitten with no vet check is introduced into a family harbouring any of the infectious diseases prone to felines.Even worse it means a home is potentially denied for another kitten in care of a charity.
We can only do this work effectively while national grants are available and when we are welcome on such sites. |
